SLIMMER'S DIARY

See Initial Weight In - 11 stone 10 pounds
See End of Week 1 - 11 stone 5 pounds

Monday 9 April - End of Week 2

11 stone 12 pounds - gained 7 pounds. Very disappointed. Even though I didn't follow the diet closely, I thought that I was keeping to the basic principals.

Eventhough The Anne Collins Diet has a lot of good options for lunch, I've been straying off a bit. Having a skinny sandwich that is not satisfying me and then binging on bread a bit -- even without butter or anything on it, probably adds up. Also, I've been having more than the alloted half pint of low fat milk per day -- using it to fill me up a bit. Old habits that I haven't been trying hard enough to get out of. Banana sandwiches are a treat for me now!

Some of the week's low points:

  • birthday party for a friend's 5 year old - I stayed away from sweets, but I did have a little popcorn and some chicken nuggets that were left over. It wasn't a lot and I didn't think it would make much difference.
  • Sunday lunch - always a hard time for dieters - I had a roast beef dinner. Eventhough I thought I was being "good" and passed on the starter and dessert (watching hubby have a big piece of chocolate cake was particularly trying), I did eat the big portion of beef, with gravy. And who knows what they put in those mashed potatoes. Guess these things add up more than you think.

Better make myself feel a little better and think of some high points:

  • I have been continuing to use Anne Collin's great recipes for low fat dinners. The hot pots are particularly easy and the family really like them!
  • Apart from low fat chocolate mousse, I've stayed away from chocolate. I'm really not missing it that much. I planned to have a bit for Easter, as there will be lots around the house (couldn't resist treating the kids and hubby), but I better stick to the diet!

Project for the week -- pick out low fat options for Easter Dinner and stick to the diet over the very long holiday weekend!

  • Q. Why is full fat milk so bad, if it is less than 5% fat? Yes there are low fat alternatives, but is full fat milk really that bad?

    A. It's not so much that ff milk is BAD. Rather, skimmed milk is so much better. Why? Because it has all the goodness without the fat. Remember, 1 pint of ff milk contains 20-22g of fat, whereas skimmed milk has virtually none. So if you're on a diet and you're following the recommended daily fat limit of 30g, then drinking 1 pint of ff milk uses up about 70% of your fat quota! Which makes it very difficult to stay on target. If we never drank ff milk again in our lives, we'd lose nothing. FF milk has no more nutrition than skimmed milk - it just has a LOT more fat.

  • Q. I saw your article in the Southern Star about low fat choices in restuarants. Has there been any lobbying for low fat alternatives in the shops? In the US you can get low fat and fat free versions of just about anything. My supermarket has only one type of low fat salad dressing. It's getting better, but it is still diffficult. Where do I have to go to find a better choice, or are they just NOT out there?!

    A. If your local supermarket doesn't stock the low-fat options you want, then ASK! Most shops run on the demand principle: i.e. if there's no demand for something, they don't stock it!! That said, things are definitely improving. Super Value in particular now stock a range of low fat alternatives, including low-fat cooking sauces, low-fat dressings and a wide range of low-fat dairy products. Interestingly enough, despite having the world's widest range of low-fat options, Americans are still among the world's fattiest nations. I'm sure this is because of the number of fast-food outlets and the huge number of drinks vending machines. If so, I'd rather live in a country with fewer fast-food outlets, even if it means having fewer low-fat food products in the shops!

Check in next week and see how I made it through Easter and let us know how you are doing too.
